“And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together [at] Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel…. When Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.” 1 SAM. 7:7 KJV

Ah, what a storyGod’s chosen people in trouble again! What makes this story strangely unique is the fact that they had just repented, destroyed all their false gods and idols and returned to the true God Jehovah. Stay tuned, since there may just be the answer to some of your trials and tribulations. We all love to read about the great victories and blessings recorded in the Bible, but would rather skip the defeats and even the close calls!

Surely since the children of Israel were celebrating a spiritual revival all would be well and the Philistines would leave them alone. Wrong! The Philistines heard of Israel’s great gathering at Mizpeh and mistook it for a preparation of war. Wow! So in spite of all the good they had done — the tearing down of idols and turning back to God — here came the Philistines, the archenemy of Israel! So, what did the children of Israel do? Well, they at least had the sense to call on Samuel the prophet who had just led their great revival. The biblical account is clear:

“Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.” 1 Sam. 7:8 KJV

Right here let us all pause and praise God for many great spiritual voices of our day who, like Samuel, know how to call on God who can lead us today into our victories. Many of them are on TBN and are yours with the click of a TV switch or on your www.itbn.org. Praise the Lord!

What did the prophet of God do? Ah, read it and learn — read it and rejoice!

“Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD.” 1 Sam. 7:9 KJV

So, here it is; this could be the key to your need, your deliverance — yes, read on:

“And Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.” 1 Sam. 7:9b

Praise be to our God. He never slumbers nor sleeps. His ear is ever open to the cry of His children!

Ah, but here is the great question of our story: Would God have heard and answered Samuel’s cry if he had not offered the whole burnt offering of a lamb unto the Lord? I will leave the answer between you and the Lord to work out. For me, it was the deciding factor. Why? First of all, did God need the lamb? Of course not — He already owns “the cattle upon a thousand hills” (Psa. 50:10)! The “why” back then is as important as it is to us today. Our offerings prove to God that He has our hearts and that He truly owns us body, soul and spirit!

Of course, beyond all of this in our story, we see a most precious type of our Lord Jesus, God’s perfect Lamb. Yes, God’s own offering that gave to all mankind the eternal and greatest victory of all! Praise the Lord.

So, how does this amazing Bible story end? WOW! Take a deep breath. . . .

“And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle.” 1 Sam. 7:10 KJV

Many of you will remember my sharing about how I have cried out to the Lord on many occasions asking why it seemed that He always waited to the last second before saving me. Remember God’s answer: “My son, it is so that when the victory comes, there is never any doubt who did it!” Yes, praise God, He receives all the praise and all the glory for our victories!

Now, for the rest of the story.

All hope gone. The enemy swooping down. Defeat and death in the air. Been there? Yes, I have — but God!

“But the LORD thundered with a great thunder that day upon the Philistines and confused them: and they were smitten before Israel.” 1 Sam. 7:10 KJV

Is that the end of the story? NO! In order that Israel would not forget God’s mighty deliverance, Samuel set up a great stone monument and named it “Ebenezer,” which in the Hebrew language means: “Hitherto hath the LORD helped us” (1 Sam. 7:12 KJV).

How about you? Is the enemy swooping down on you? Has he struck great fear in you? I read a recent statistic that 70% of Americans are in such fear of the future that it is causing all kinds of physical sickness in them. I would bet that the other 30% are we who know the love and provision of our wonderful Lord! Praise be to His holy name!

So, finally, as dear Oral Roberts taught us: “If you have a need, plant a seed.” Oh, I know, the heretic hunters will cry, “Crouch is after your money again!” My answer is simple: Give wherever God directs you. Give to your church; to a missionary; to a poor neighbor; yes, to TBN. But give God a seed to work with or there can be no harvest.

One last testimony: When the doctors told my Jan that she had only six months or so to live and that radiation and chemotherapy were her only hope, she refused all and, as she has testified, fell into the arms of Jesus! But, she also did what Samuel did — she emptied her little bank account and gave God her best offering! So did God hear her cry? All that needs to be said is that eight years later she is well and strong, serving her Lord at the Holy Land Experience in Orlando, Florida!

So, will God save us? After 40 years of God’s miracles, Jan and I can shout a resounding YES!

Join us this glorious Resurrection month of April as we begin our great season of Praise-a-Thon — yes, right on into May — as we celebrate TBN’s 40th birthday. Help us sing, shout and praise the Lord with all your favorite TBN family.

Jan and I love you and will join you in giving our very best to send the Good News to the ends of the world! Glory!
